The Fountas and Pinnell Benchmark Assessment System consists of a series of carefully designed benchmark books that measure the level of difficulty at which a student is able to read fiction and nonfiction texts.1 The books range in difficulty from those for beginning readers (A) to those for advanced readers (Z). The F&P Benchmark Assessment System assesses the five elements of reading: phonological awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. In addition, it addresses issues of student motivation and interest in reading. A unique feature of this assessment is the collection of fiction and nonfiction texts that are designed to interest and engage the readers while at the same time yielding important information for the teacher.
The Fountas and Pinnell Leveled Literacy Intervention (LLI) provides powerful small-group supplementary interventions that broaden the effect of one-to-one intervention that brings struggling readers to grade level. LLI lessons are provided daily and are supported by high-quality, original leveled books. This interventoin provides a high level of professional development to prepare educators for inplementing the system and developing teacher expertise. Both fiction and nonfiction books have been created specifically for LLI.
